Discovery History
Cranial Nerve Zero was first identified in humans in 1913 by anatomist Gustav Fritsch, though it had been observed in other vertebrates earlier. Despite being present in all humans, CN0 is often omitted from standard anatomy textbooks.
Why Was It Overlooked?
Several factors contributed to CN0 remaining obscure:
- Small size β Much thinner than other cranial nerves
- Unusual location β Closely associated with olfactory structures
- No clear motor function β Doesnβt control obvious movements
- Numbering convention β Adding βnerve zeroβ disrupted established I-XII system
Anatomical Location
CN0 runs along the medial surface of the olfactory tract, closely paralleling but remaining distinct from the olfactory nerve (CN I).
Course of the Nerve
- Origin β Nasal mucosa, specifically the medial nasal septum
- Path β Through the cribriform plate alongside olfactory fibers
- Termination β Forebrain, specifically septal nuclei and preoptic area
Neural Projections
What makes CN0 unique is its target destinations in the brain:
