Beta-Androstanol
BANOL โข b-Anol โข Beta-Anol โข Molecule A โข 5a-androstan-3b-ol โข 3b-hydroxy-5a-androstane
Overview
Beta-androstanol (5ฮฑ-androstan-3ฮฒ-ol, CAS 1224-92-6) is a fully saturated androstane steroid โ meaning it has no double bonds in the ring system. It is a testosterone metabolite and chemical cousin of androsterone. It was first discovered and introduced as a pheromone in 1998 by the Salk Institute.
It is classified in the social unisexy spectrum โ effective for both men and women โ and is described as a "chemical hybrid of beta-androstenol and androstanone" by the community, combining social comfort with smooth charm.
Pharmacology
What It Is
Beta-androstanol (CโโHโโO, MW 276.46) is the simplest androstanol โ just the androstane skeleton with a single 3ฮฒ-hydroxyl group. No ketones, no double bonds. It is the 3ฮฒ-epimer of alpha-androstanol (which has a 3ฮฑ-OH). The fully saturated structure makes it one of the most chemically stable pheromone molecules.
Biosynthesis
Endogenous steroid produced as a reduction product of androgens:
Testosterone โ DHT โ Androstanedione โ Androstanone โ Beta-Androstanol (via reductases)
Also related to epiandrosterone (which shares the 3ฮฒ-OH orientation but has an additional 17-ketone).
Detection
Detected primarily via VNO at close range. The saturated structure means virtually zero volatility โ it does not evaporate or travel through air. Works through skin contact and close proximity VNO pumping.
Per PheromoneXS, beta-androstanol is "indicative of an as yet unclassified neurological influence not directly associated with olfaction" โ suggesting the mechanism may extend beyond standard VNO receptor binding. The Salk Institute described it as "the only hormone that stops or reverses gene activity," though the specifics of this gene regulation mechanism are not well characterized.
Do not confuse with:
- Beta-androstenol (5ฮฑ-androst-16-en-3ฮฒ-ol) โ has one double bond at position 16
- Beta-androstadienol (androsta-5,16-dien-3ฮฒ-ol) โ has two double bonds at positions 5,16
- Epiandrosterone (5ฮฑ-androstan-3ฮฒ-ol-17-one) โ same 3ฮฒ-OH but with a C17 ketone
The saturated ring system gives beta-androstanol very low volatility, meaning it is detected primarily through close-range pathways rather than olfactory receptors.
Effects
PheromoneXS Description (primary source)
PheromoneXS attributes the following effects based on extensive community research:
- Attractiveness โ demonstrated when worn by men in the presence of women
- Social comfort and ease โ reduces social friction and barriers
- Internal peace โ calming, grounding quality
- Mood elevation โ uplifting without mania or overstimulation
- Increased confidence โ natural, non-aggressive assurance
Also noted: "direct emotional responses associated with attractiveness, social comfort, internal peace, mood elevation and contrarily also linked to aggression and anger." The duality of comfort AND aggression at different doses is a distinctive characteristic.
Alpha Dream Molecule A Blind Testing (secondary source)
Beta-androstanol was tested as Molecule A in the Alpha Dream blind molecule testing project on PheroTruth. Key reports:
wiserd (10-40 mcg, detailed multi-day testing):
- Increased focus and task orientation
- "A sort of rearrangement in perception"
- Strong visual brightening at 25 mcg โ "Oh my God, that's so blue! Oh my God, that's so green!"
- Calming, mellow, rational mood
- Effects lasted approximately 45-90 minutes
- Extreme drowsiness at higher doses (40 mcg)
halo0073 (~125 mcg overdose):
- Stomach flips, improved mood, increased energy
- Cold chills and headache at high dose (resolved after washing off)
Blind testing consensus:
- Calming, mellow, rational
- Mood improvement and increased confidence
- Reduced social anxiety, increased chattiness
- Enhanced eye contact from women aged 20-25
- Others seem "extra-comfortable" and more open
- One tester described it as "Androstadienone + Alpha Androstenol" with "icebreaker qualities"
DiscoverXS Product Reports
- "Call to action" effect โ urge to be active and productive (reported in Glace, which contains beta-androstanol)
- "Youthful signature" โ reduces perceived age and intimidation
- Softens aggressive androsterone signatures
- Bonding and imprinting properties โ "some of the betas do this sort of bonding"
Dosage Guidelines
PheromoneXS sells BANOL in concentrations from 2 mcg to 400 mcg per spray (or 5-100 mcg per drop in DPG), and recommends 12.5-100 mcg as the general range for most users.
| Level | Amount |
|---|---|
| Light | 5-15 mcg |
| Moderate | 15-50 mcg |
| Strong | 50-100 mcg |
Notes:
- PheromoneXS range: 12.5-100 mcg (spray); 5-100 mcg per drop (DPG)
- wiserd (blind testing) recommended 15-20 mcg as optimal with ~45 min effective duration
- Aggressive front reported at doses as low as 2.5 mcg โ uncommon but noteworthy (per PheromoneXS)
- Custom blenders use as little as 2.5 mcg in multi-molecule formulas
Duration:
- Active effects: 45-90 minutes (wiserd's testing)
- Persists on clothing for extended periods (wiserd noted continued detection days later)
- Very stable in DPG and oil bases due to saturated structure
Concerns:
- wiserd flagged possible vitamin D receptor interference โ experienced a "negative tinge" and recommended extremely small doses combined with vitamin D3 supplementation
- Alpha Dream's Chris posted a toxicology concern that led some testers (including dexter) to halt testing
- The vitamin D concern is unconfirmed but worth noting at higher doses
Products
- Glace (Alpha Dream) โ blend containing beta-androstanol alongside alpha-androstenol, beta-androstenol, estratetraenol, DHEAS
- Celebrity XS (PheromoneXS) โ "feel like a celebrity" blend with beta-androstanol, alpha-androstenol, beta-androstenol, androsterone, androsterone sulfate, pregnenolone
- Achar (Alpha Dream, for women) โ blend with estratetraenol, alpha-androstenol, beta-androstanol, copulins
- Innocence (for women) โ blend with alpha-androstenol, pregnenolone, beta-THDOC, estratetraenol, beta-androstanol, epi-androsterone, androsterone sulfate, DHEAS
- PheromoneXS single molecule โ available as BANOL in DPG (drops) or spray, 5-100 mcg concentrations
Community Consensus
Beta-androstanol has multiple evidence sources: PheromoneXS has sold it as a single molecule (BANOL) longer than any other vendor, making their characterization the most experience-backed. The Alpha Dream Molecule A blind testing provides controlled data from testers who didn't know what they were using. And DiscoverXS product discussions add blend-level observations.
Strengths:
- Available as a single molecule from PheromoneXS (longest-running vendor for this compound)
- Blind testing data from Alpha Dream corroborates PheromoneXS's described effects
- Social unisexy spectrum โ works for both men's and women's blends
- Unique gene regulation mechanism (per Salk Institute research)
- Consistent mood elevation and social comfort across all sources
- "Call to action" motivational effect is distinctive among pheromone molecules
- Non-estrogenic, relatively safe profile
Limitations:
- Short effective duration (~45-90 min per blind testing)
- Unresolved vitamin D receptor concern from wiserd's testing
- Alpha Dream halted some testing over toxicology concerns
- Overdose symptoms (headaches, chills) at ~125 mcg
- Aggressive front at very low doses (2.5 mcg) in some users
- Possible male repulsion at certain doses
Comparison to Related Molecules:
- More calming/rational than androstanone (which is more "charm and attention")
- Less playful than alpha-androstenol (which is pure social lubrication)
- Smoother than androsterone (which emphasizes authority/respect)
- Less depression risk than androstadienone (A1)
- Similar bonding quality to beta-androstenol but with added focus/task orientation
- Shares the 3ฮฒ-OH configuration with epiandrosterone but lacks the C17 ketone
Rating: 7/10 โ Well-supported by PheromoneXS's long-term product data, Alpha Dream blind testing, and DiscoverXS blend reports. The unique gene regulation mechanism and social unisexy classification make it a distinctive molecule. Docked points for short duration, unresolved vitamin D concerns, and the uncommon aggression at low doses.
