Overview

Epiandrosterone (3b-hydroxy-5a-androstan-17-one), also known as beta-androsterone or "b-Rone", is the 3b-epimer of alpha-androsterone and is commonly called "The Charmer" or "Swag Pheromone." It is a metabolite of the most abundant adrenal androgenic steroid DHEA in young adult humans.

While it is the same molecular formula as alpha-androsterone, the beta (3b) orientation of the hydroxyl group creates dramatically different pheromone effects. Where alpha-androsterone projects authority and respect, epiandrosterone creates likability, social acceptance, and a charming "awe" effect. It is a powerful social pheromone rather than a status/authority molecule.

What It Is

Epiandrosterone (3ฮฒ-hydroxy-5ฮฑ-androstan-17-one) is the 3ฮฒ-epimer of androsterone โ€” identical molecular formula (Cโ‚โ‚‰Hโ‚ƒโ‚€Oโ‚‚, MW 290.44) but with the hydroxyl group pointing in the opposite direction (ฮฒ instead of ฮฑ at C-3). This single stereochemical difference โ€” the orientation of one -OH group โ€” creates dramatically different pheromone effects. Also known as iso-androsterone.

Biosynthesis

Epiandrosterone is an endogenous steroid produced as a metabolite of DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), the most abundant adrenal androgen in young adults:

It is present in human sweat and body fluids. Levels correlate with DHEA production, which peaks in the 20s โ€” potentially explaining why epiandrosterone's "boyfriend" effect resonates most with younger women.

Detection

Detected via VNO (vomeronasal organ). As a fully saturated androstane, it has low volatility and works primarily through close-range contact. The 3ฮฒ-hydroxyl orientation is the critical structural feature โ€” it causes VNO receptors to interpret the signal differently from 3ฮฑ-androsterone, producing social charm instead of authority/respect.
