Overview

Androstenetrione (4-androstene-3,6,17-trione) is a tri-ketone androstene known in the pheromone community for its powerful visual and emotional effects. Often called "trione" or "e-trione," it creates what users describe as an "airbrush" beautification effect - making both the wearer and surrounding people appear more attractive.

The molecule also functions as an aromatase inhibitor, which may contribute to its effects by modifying local hormone balance on the skin. It was historically linked to the putative pheromone designation P86 based on research by community member SteveO.

Pharmacology

What It Is

Androstenetrione (4-androstene-3,6,17-trione) is a C19 androstene tri-ketone โ€” three carbonyl groups at C-3, C-6, and C-17, plus the 4-ene double bond. Molecular formula Cโ‚โ‚‰Hโ‚‚โ‚„Oโ‚ƒ, MW 300.39. The 6-ketone is the distinguishing feature โ€” this position is unusual among pheromone steroids and is responsible for the molecule's aromatase-inhibiting properties.

Aromatase Inhibition

Androstenetrione is a suicide inhibitor (mechanism-based inactivator) of aromatase (CYP19A1), the enzyme that converts androgens to estrogens. This is why it was sold as the bodybuilding supplement "6-OXO" before FDA regulation โ€” oral doses reduced estrogen and elevated testosterone. In topical pheromone use at mcg doses, the aromatase inhibition may subtly modify local hormone balance on the skin.

Biosynthesis

Not a major endogenous metabolite. It is primarily a synthetic compound produced by oxidation of the androstene skeleton. Its connection to the putative pheromone P86 (identified by community researcher SteveO) suggests possible trace endogenous presence.

Detection

Detected via olfactory system (not VNO). The 4-ene double bond provides some volatility, and the tri-ketone structure gives it a distinctive olfactory signature. The visual/perceptual effects (beautification, euphoria) are pharmacologically unexplained and may involve novel receptor interactions beyond standard steroid pathways.

Scientific Context

Not to be confused with:

  • Androstatrione (5ฮฑ-androst-3,16,17-trione) - the saturated version, also has visual effects but different profile
  • Androstenone (one ketone, alpha/dominance pheromone)
  • Androstenedione (two ketones, prohormone)
