Overview

Androstenol (5a-androst-16-en-3a-ol), commonly called "Nol" or "A-nol" in the community, is the "friendly" pheromone -- associated with youth, approachability, and social openness. The community calls it "The Conversation Grease Pheromone" because of its remarkable ability to smooth social interactions and make conversation flow effortlessly.

Alpha-androstenol is produced by both men and women and is present in fresh male sweat, but it oxidizes to androstenone within about 20 minutes of exposure to air. It has a musky, sweaty aromatic scent that some describe as very similar to sandalwood.

This is widely considered the most universally useful pheromone molecule. A study at the University of Warwick found that both men and women exposed to androstenol rated women as sexier, warmer, and more attractive. Women also rated men wearing androstenol consistently higher on the attractiveness scale, while interestingly, men consistently downgraded other men wearing androstenol.

Most commercial products contain alpha-androstenol. Beta-androstenol is associated with deeper emotional bonding and "truth serum" effects rather than casual friendliness (see separate beta-androstenol page). Androtics Direct products like Instant Openness (IO) and Instant Honesty (IH) reportedly contain differing ratios of alpha and beta androstenol, with IH being predominantly beta androstenol.

Pharmacology

What It Is

Alpha-androstenol (5ฮฑ-androst-16-en-3ฮฑ-ol) is a C19 androstene steroid with a double bond at C-16 and a 3ฮฑ-hydroxyl group. Molecular formula Cโ‚โ‚‰Hโ‚ƒโ‚€O, MW 274.44. It is the reduced form of androstenone โ€” same skeleton, but with a hydroxyl (-OH) at C-3 instead of a ketone (=O). The 16-ene double bond gives it moderate volatility and a characteristic musky/sandalwood scent.

Biosynthesis

Endogenous steroid present in fresh human sweat:

Testosterone โ†’ DHT โ†’ Androstenone โ†’ Alpha-Androstenol (via 3ฮฑ-HSD reduction)

Critically, androstenol oxidizes back to androstenone within ~20 minutes of exposure to air. This is why fresh sweat smells friendly (androstenol) but stale sweat smells aggressive (androstenone). Commercial preparations in oil or DPG are stable against this oxidation.

Detection

Detected via VNO (primary pheromone pathway). The 16-ene double bond provides enough volatility for both VNO and some olfactory detection. The 3ฮฑ-hydroxyl group (vs androstenone's 3-ketone) is what creates the dramatically different social signaling โ€” friendly/approachable instead of dominant/sexual.

Oxidation Note

Fresh androstenol oxidizes to androstenone when exposed to air. This is why:

  • "Fresh sweat" smells friendly (androstenol)
  • "Stale sweat" smells aggressive (androstenone)

Commercial preparations in oil or DPG base are stable against oxidation. Always store androstenol products sealed when not in use.
